Orthopedic Fixation Devices — Screws, Plates, and Nails
For standard fracture management, bone implants are categorized by their mechanical function.
Orthopedic Plates: Screwed onto the surface of the bone to maintain alignment. Locking Plates are a 2026 standard, where the screw head locks into the plate itself, creating a fixed-angle construct that is essential for patients with poor bone quality (osteoporosis).
Intramedullary (IM) Nails: Rods inserted into the marrow canal of long bones (like the femur). These "internal splints" allow for early weight-bearing and have a lower risk of infection than external plates.
Cannulated Screws: Hollow screws that allow a guide wire to be placed first, ensuring extreme precision in delicate areas like the femoral neck or wrist.
